Bimini Island, Bahamas
Undersea diving has never been like this. Off Bimini Island, master scuba diver Bob Cohen takes an underwater scooter drive with the Breathing Observation Bubble (BOB). Only certified divers can operate the BOB, which pipes air from a tank under the handlebars into an acrylic dome, replacing a diver's mask and breathing apparatus. Wireless technology lets riders talk to other BOBsters darting through the water nearby, as well as to armchair divers in a boat or back on shore. With their energy saved from not having to kick, divers can stay submerged almost an hour with the BOB. Like most modern scuba gear, the BOB features a computer that tells riders when to come up and calculates decompression times for a safe return to the surface. The Kuwaiti military has had its own fleet of BOBs built for harbor patrol, customized in navy blue, with spear gun racks and wireless communications devices built in.
