Work with your group to find out the following information. You may use any of our usual search engines to find out the following information.
- What is the shape of the baseball infield? What is the area of this infield?
- How far is it between the bases?
- How far is it from the pitchers mound to home plate?
- How many teams are there in the major leagues? On a map, where do most of the teams play?
- Name two new stadiums. What is the oldest ball park?
- How much does a baseball weigh? What is its circumference?
- How wide is home plate? What is the shape of home plate? Extra credit: Can you find the exact measurements?
- If the average major league pitcher throws a fast ball that is 90 mph, how long does it take for the ball to cross home plate? What about a 60 mph off-speed pitch?
- The strike zone is defined as the area that begins halfway between your shoulders and your waist, and ends at your knees. Draw a scale picture of the strike zone for the four members of your team. (Use the information of the width of home plate to make it accurate.)
- How far is it from third base to first base? If a catcher is standing on home plate, exactly how far does the catcher have to throw the ball to reach second base?
